Benedictine College Piggyback Songs

In the elementary classroom setting, music can be used to enhance the learning environment in reaching curriculum objectives outside of the music classroom.  Music can also facilitate the development of community.

In ED 214, one of our assignments is to create an original piggyback song for the elementary classroom setting and to enhance our student's understanding of technology through the creation of pictorial songbooks for their created work.  Over the past several years, our students have written over 300 songs!

You will find several examples below of student created piggyback songs.  If you use these songs, please credit the author appropriately and do not use the songs for commercial purposes.

Colors
(Sung to the melody of “Yankee Doodle”

Verse 1:
Red and yellow and even blue
Make up the primary colors
Put them all together and
You have all the others

Chorus:
Blue and yellow make up green
Red and blue make purple
Yellow and red make up orange
And here are all the colors.

Verse 2:
Now you know all the colors
And what they make together
Mix them up and try them out
And see what you discover.

Chorus:
Blue and yellow make up green
Red and blue make purple
Yellow and red make up orange
And her are all the colors.

In Our Backyard
(Sung to “Here We Go Around the Mulberry Bush”

This is the way we bounce a balloon
Bounce a balloon, bounce a balloon.
This is the way we bounce a balloon,
In our backyard.

This is the way we ring a bell
Ring a bell, ring a bell.
This is the way we ring a bell,
In our backyard.

This is the way we fly like a bat
Fly like a bat, fly like a bat.
This is the way we fly like a bat,
In our backyard.
This is the way we play in a box
Play in a box, play in a box.
This is the way we play in a box
In our backyard.

This is the way we…
Eat a banana…
Ride a bike…
Bounce a ball…
In our backyard.

The Stretching Song
(Sung to the melody of “Mary Had a Little Lamb”)

Reach your hands up over your head,
Over your head, over your head.
Reach your hands up over your head,
Try and touch the sky!

Bend your waist now back and forth,
Back and forth, back and forth.
Bend your waist now back and forth,
This will stretch your sides!

Now reach over and touch your toes,
Touch your toes, touch your toes.
Now reach over and touch your toes,
Reach with all your might!

Flap your arms just like a bird,
Like a bird, like a bird.
Flap your arms just like a bird,
Pretend that you can fly!

Ick!
(Sung to the melody of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star")

Wash your hands after you sneeze.
Keep others healthy, won't you please?
Germs are bad, they make you sick.
If you don't wash, we'll all yell ICK!!!
Wash your hands after you sneeze.
Keep others healthy, won't you please?

I'm a Little Plant
Sung to the melody of "I'm A Little Teapot")

I'm a little seed
In a pot.
Surround by soil,
And deep in thought.

If you give me water
And sunshine,
I will grow tall
And be just fine.

I'm a little seedling
Starting to grow.
Here is my short stem
And first leaves to show.

If you keep on watering
And giving me sun,
I will grow stronger
With each one.

I'm your little plant now
But please don't leave .
I now have a long stem
And things to achieve.

I still need water
Sun and love
To keep on growing
To the sky above.

Good Morning All
(Sung to the melody of "Farmer in the Dell")

Good morning all, good morning all.
It's a brand new day to learn and play.
Good morning all.

We'll treat each other well
And nice things we will tell.
We'll be respectful through the day.
Good morning all.

Today is ours to learn
And practice taking turns.
Making mistakes is okay
We'll do our best all day.

We'll have lots of fun
Until the day is done.
We'll learn great things
Until the bell rings.
Good morning all.

Growing, Growing Little Seed
(Sung to the melody of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star")

Growing, growing little seed.
Sun and light are what you need.
Up above the soil you show
Your green leaves as you grow.
Growing, growing little seed.
sund and light are what you need.

Growing, growing little plant.
Hurry up, don't say you can't.
We want you to grow up tall,
And you will help feed us all.
Growing, growing little seed.
Sun and light are what you need.

Who can make us shine?
If you know, please let it show.

Jake will make us shine!
Hi, ho! Jake really knows,
How to stand in line!

When We Use Our Manners
(Sung to the melody of "When We All Get Together")

Oh, when we use our manners,
Our manners, our manners,
Oh, when we use our manners,
The happier we'll be!

So say please and thank you,
And raise your hand
Oh, when we use our manners,
The happier we'll be!

Deep In the Heart of First Grade
(Sung to the melody of "Deep In The Heart of Texas")

We show up on time,
Because we love to rhyme
Deep in the heart of first grade!

We say "THANK YOU,"
Because it's right to do
Deep in the heart of first grade.

We wash our hands.
Germs we withstand
Deep in the heart of first grade.

When we say, "AahhhChoo!"
We say, "Bless You!"
Deep in the heart of first grade.

We share our toys
And keep down the noise
Deep in the heart of first grade.

We love our school
And the Golden Rule
Deep in the heart of first grade.

We open our ears
To hear our peers
Deep in the heart of first grade.

We respect every one.
We all have FUN
Deep in the heart of first grade.
